Karoline Mortensen is Associate Dean of Business Programs and Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy at the University of Miami Herbert Business School. She is Associate Residential Faculty at Stanford Residential College, living and learning among first-year students. She is Associate Director of the Center for Health Management and Policy, and was the founding Director of the Master of Health Administration (MHA) program at the University of Miami. She previously was a member of the faculty in the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, College Park. She earned her Ph.D. in Health Services Organization and Policy from the University of Michigan. She has been a member of AcademyHealth since joining in graduate school, and has been attending ARM for over 15 years.
Dr. Mortensen is a health services researcher, and her research interests are focused on health insurance, health care utilization, and the health care delivery system. She has published in leading journals including Health Services Research, Medical Care, Health Affairs, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Health Forum, Human Relations, among others. She has received awards for outstanding teaching, mentoring of graduate students, and mentoring of undergraduate students, and was recently named a Poets&Quants top 50 undergraduate business school professor. She served as a member of the Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Health Services and Value Research study section from 2015-2021, served on the Committee for Advocacy and Public Policy for AcademyHealth, was a Public Voices OpEd Project Fellow, is on the steering committee of the Southeastern Health Economics Study Group. Dr. Mortensen is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Health Economics and Management, and on the Editorial Board for Health Services Research, and has testified before the United States Congress House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health on the Medicare Advantage program.
