Abigail Fleming is the Mysun Foundation Practitioner in Residence at the University of Miami School of Law Environmental Justice Clinic (“EJC”). The EJC advocates for and seeks to empower vulnerable communities who disproportionately bear the environmental, economic, and health burdens of the development, implementation, and enforcement of the law. Ms. Fleming’s work sits at the intersection of civil rights, environmental, poverty, and public health law, tackling issues in South Florida including climate change, contamination, environmental health, and municipal equity. Ms. Fleming seeks systemic change for clients through advocacy, public policy resources, and rights education.
At the EJC, Ms. Fleming provides litigation support for two of the Clinic’s class action toxic tort cases, Miller, et al. v. City of Fort Myers, et al. and Styles, et al. v. City of Miami, et al. In addition, Ms. Fleming works on community lawyering projects that address municipal policies and practices that adversely and disproportionately affect the well-being of vulnerable communities. She also organizes community outreach and needs assessments, supervises student teams, and assists with academic instruction.
Ms. Fleming graduated from Georgia College and State University (B.A. in Political Science) where she interned for the Georgia House of Representatives. After graduation, Ms. Fleming traveled to China and served as a teacher with the English Language Institute of China. Upon returning to the states, Ms. Fleming served as a member of Teach for America and AmeriCorps to combat the effects of poverty. Her experience with Teach for America cemented her desire to become a lawyer to better advocate for and empower disenfranchised communities.
While at the University of Miami School of Law, she worked as a Clinical Fellow for the Environmental Justice Clinic, Writing Dean’s Fellow for the Academic Achievement Program, and Research Assistant. In 2019, Ms. Fleming received the HOPE Exemplary Service to the Poor Award for her commitment to community empowerment in the Dunbar community.
In addition, Ms. Fleming assisted with environmental and land use cases as a summer associate for both Henderson Franklin, a full-service law firm, and the Law Office of Anne D. Carter, LLC, a boutique real estate and environmental law firm. After graduation, Ms. Fleming returned to the Environmental Justice Clinic as a part-time lecturer, and now leads the EJC as the Fredman Foundation Practitioner in Residence.
Ms. Fleming is also a founding partner at Traibel Fleming, a criminal defense law firm in Miami, Florida.
