Sadiq Khan was elected Mayor of London in May 2016, winning the largest personal mandate in the history of British politics by securing the support of 1.3 million Londoners. He was re-elected as Mayor in 2020 for a second term, and most recently was elected for a historic third term in May 2024.

Prior to becoming Mayor, Sadiq was the Member of Parliament for Tooting in South London for 11 years. During this time, he attended Cabinet and served as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice from May 2010 and Shadow Minister for London from 2013.

From December 2021, Sadiq Khan served as Chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a global network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities that are united in action to confront the climate crisis. Since November 2023 he has served as Co-Chair of the network, with the innovative co-chair leadership model a move to champion inclusive global leadership in climate action.

He was the first leader of a C40 megacity to declare a climate emergency and in 2020 set the target for London to be net zero by 2030. He has been championing a green and just recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic from London’s City Hall. Committed to implementing sustainable measures to address air pollution, improve health and reduce congestion, in 2023 Sadiq introduced the landmark expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) London-wide, the largest of its kind in Europe. His subsequent re-election as Mayor of London in 2024 is proof that bold leadership that implements green policies win elections.
