Speaker Bio
Ellyn Metcalf is the Vice President for Education at the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, providing strategic
leadership and oversight of all educational programs. She drives the design and execution of initiatives that bring the stories of
Medal of Honor recipients to life, highlighting the values they embodied and creating impactful learning experiences that foster
a deep understanding of the Medal of Honor and character. She previously held the role of Director of the Center for Character
Excellence at the National Medal of Honor Institute.

Ellyn was raised outside of Boston, Massachusetts. She earned a B.S. in Government from the Coast Guard Academy and two
master’s degrees in education: an MS in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from Fordham University and an
MEd in Elementary Education from the University of Massachusetts. Committed to life-long learning and the personal
development of others, she recently completed training programs in Dare to Lead, Diversity and Inclusion, Senior Leadership
Principles, and Small Team Facilitation. She is an associate executive coach certified through the Coach Diversity Institute and a
formal mentor in the Coast Guard Academy Cadet Mentoring Program.

Commander Metcalf retired from the Coast Guard after 20 years of honorable active duty and reserve service to the nation. While
on active duty and during a pioneering era for women in the military, Ellyn initially served on Coast Guard cutters supporting
maritime law enforcement operations. Her demonstrated commitment to developing and mentoring others eventually led to her
assignment to the first formal Leadership Development staff at the Coast Guard Academy. As a reservist, she served as a Quality
Performance Consultant in the New England region. Post 9-11, her reserve efforts were largely in support of maritime safety and
security in the ports of Seattle, Boston, and Providence.

Ellyn recently served as the Associate Director of the Loy Institute for Leadership at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. She
spearheaded the re-design of all facets of the Cadet Leader Development Program, co-chaired the Superintendent’s Equity Task
Force and was part of the team that re-wrote the Coast Guard’s 28 Leadership Competencies. Prior to this position, Ellyn was an
exemplary rated middle school science teacher for 10 years and became known for her ability to integrate character development
throughout her lessons. In 2016, she founded The Total Teacher Project, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide leadership
training to classroom teachers. In her new role, she will continue her legacy of developing leaders of character for the nation by
designing and delivering the K-12 Medal of Honor curriculum that inspires the next generation to answer the call to live and lead
with honor.
