Dr. Mapham created Vula after his experiences in rural healthcare and later as a specialist ophthalmologist in Swaziland and South Africa. He needed to connect frontline health workers in underserved areas with local specialists. Vula runs software that connects health workers to get patients to the right healthcare. Since launching in 2014 over 1 million patients have benefitted. Health workers love using Vula and the National Department of Health calls Vula the glue that holds the health system together and the oil that helps it work efficiently. Data is collected in a secure manner and their have been 7 publications demonstrating Vula's impact. The UNDP selected Vula as one of the top four innovations improving access to healthcare.
