Speaker Bio
Ambassador James Brewster is an internationally recognized diplomat, global strategist, C-suite executive, and human rights leader whose work sits at the intersection of geopolitics, business, and societal change. He is widely sought after for his ability to decode shifting global dynamics—how politics, culture, consumer behavior, and leadership intersect to shape markets, nations, and institutions.
Named one of Foreign Policy’s 100 Global Thinkers, alongside Ban Ki-moon, Hillary Clinton, and Angela Merkel, Ambassador Brewster is a leading authority on international political strategy, diplomacy, crisis leadership, and the positioning and branding of global leaders and CEOs. His insights are informed by decades of experience advising presidents, governments, multinational companies, and boards around the world.
Ambassador Brewster currently serves as a Partner at Patino, Brewster & Partners, a global political and strategic advisory firm, and as CEO of Insignias Global, an international trade, investment, marketing, and brand development advisory company. Through these platforms, he advises heads of state, senior political leaders, and top international brands navigating geopolitical risk, reputational challenges, and global growth.
He has played senior advisory roles in the campaigns of President Barack Obama, President Joe Biden, and numerous political leaders globally, including serving as Lead for Caribbean Policy for the Biden 2020 campaign. His work provides clients with unparalleled access to global decision-makers, multilateral institutions, and human rights organizations.
From 2013 to 2016, Ambassador Brewster served as United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic under President Obama, making history as the first openly gay U.S. Ambassador in the Western Hemisphere. During his tenure, he helped advance the human rights of more than 300,000 stateless Dominicans and migrants of Haitian descent, while negotiating landmark agreements in security, trade, environmental policy, immigration enforcement, and anti-corruption efforts—including the first extradition treaty in over a century and the region’s first Status of Forces Agreement.
Prior to his diplomatic service, Ambassador Brewster spent 20 years as a senior executive at General Growth Properties, then the world’s second-largest shopping center REIT. As an officer of the $40-billion public company, he led multi-billion-dollar acquisitions and complex global transactions.
A global advocate for equality and democratic governance, Ambassador Brewster serves on the advisory boards of the Council on Global Equality, Parliamentarians for Global Action, National Democratic Institute, The Atlantic Council, and the World Affairs Council. An OUT100 honoree, he continues to be a powerful voice for human rights and inclusive leadership worldwide.
Ambassador Brewster is a frequent global speaker and media commentator, appearing across leading international platforms to discuss geopolitics, leadership under pressure, global risk, and the future of democracy.
