The collective and legislative consciousness on human rights is shifting on the African continent and demonstrating respect for human rights is now seen as a critical corporate responsibility and fundamental to a company’s social license to operate. African states are increasingly demanding accountability from investors and corporates operating in their countries, imposing business and human rights considerations as a key aspect for sustainable development not only in traditional extractives industries but new industries such as technology and artificial intelligence.
