Jamila Gilbert is a Latina woman of Purépechan-Mexican roots, a visual artist, a communications professional who speaks four languages, and an astronaut. On May 25, 2023 during the Unity 25 mission, Jamila became the 3rd woman to fly to space with Virgin Galactic, the 4th Latina to have flown to space, one of the first 100 women astronauts in history (83rd), and only the 650th human in space.

A proud New Mexico State University Aggie, Jamila holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Museum Conservation, a supplementary major in Linguistics, and minors in Studio Art and Anthropology. Her passion for foreign languages and visual storytelling have informed her professional background in marketing, graphic design, and communications.

Since 2019, Jamila has led internal communications for Virgin Galactic, an aerospace and space travel company pioneering human spaceflight for private individuals and researchers with its advanced air and space vehicles operating space missions from southern New Mexico. Jamila lives, works, and savors life in her hometown of Las Cruces, New Mexico, which she particularly loves for its endless and unobstructed skies.
